Autism Q&A

What is autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and processes information. Because it exists on a spectrum, autism can present differently in every individual, ranging from mild to more significant challenges.

Some individuals may have strong language skills and high independence, while others may need more support in daily life.

What causes autism?

There’s no single known cause of autism. Current research indicates that it likely develops due to a mix of genetic influences and environmental factors. Some people may have a family history of autism, while others may develop it due to early brain development differences. It is not caused by parenting style, vaccines, or any specific event.

How is autism diagnosed?

Rebecka Maynard, PMHNP, doesn’t diagnose autism, but evaluation and diagnosis are typically handled by professionals specializing in developmental and behavioral conditions. These may include developmental pediatricians, child psychologists, neurologists, or licensed clinical psychologists.

The diagnostic process often involves detailed interviews, behavioral observations, developmental history, and standardized tools to assess communication, behavior, and social interaction patterns.

How is autism treated?

There’s no cure for autism, but early intervention and tailored support can make a significant difference. Treatment plans are personalized based on the individual’s strengths, needs, and goals.

Common treatments include behavioral therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills training. Educational support and family involvement are also key components of care.

Rebecka provides medication management for individuals with autism who may benefit from this type of support. While medication doesn’t treat autism itself, it can help manage certain symptoms that sometimes come with it, like anxiety, mood swings, irritability, impulsivity, or attention difficulties.

This involves a careful review of symptoms, overall health, and treatment history to determine whether medication might be helpful. If medication is prescribed, Rebecka monitors its effects over time, adjusting the dose as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness. This approach is collaborative, aiming to improve daily functioning and quality of life in a way that respects each patient’s unique needs.
